E-Bikes: What Parents Need to Know

Parents, we need your help! We continue to see juveniles riding illegal e-motorcycles, participating in street takeovers, and riding unsafely. When buying a new bike for your kids, please pay attention to what you are buying. If the bike does not have pedals, it is an electric motorcycle and likely illegal on City streets without a driver’s license. Modified e-motorcycles are capable of traveling up to 60 MPH. We have seen an increase in e-device-related collisions and want to prevent a tragedy. To improve rider safety, juveniles may have the option to attend a two-hour bike safety class with their parents instead of paying a fine.

Facts:

  • Citation Fines: Up to $500
  • Towing and Storage: Approximately $219, and $51 each day of storage

There are three classes of legal E-bikes:

  • Class 1 E-Bikes – Pedal-assisted bicycles with no throttle and a maximum speed of 20 mph
  • Class 2 E-bikes – Throttle-assisted e-bikes that feature a throttle providing power assistance up to 20 mph
  • Class 3 E-Bikes – The fastest of the three classes, with pedal assistance only, with a maximum speed of 28 mph
