Copper Wire Theft Prevention

Copper Wires on a Table.

Copper theft is a growing concern in Irvine, affecting public safety, increasing repair costs, and leaving neighborhoods without power for street lighting. Thieves are targeting underground utility boxes, streetlight access panels, and electrical wiring for valuable copper, and replacing it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you spot anyone suspicious near light poles, electrical boxes, or performing work after hours, call the Irvine Police Department at 949-724-7000.

Report:

  • Work being done outside regular hours
  • People loitering near electrical equipment
  • Exposed copper wire
  • Bike path lights not working after dark
  • Piles of wires in bushes or “hidden” from view
  • Open electrical boxes
