Electric Scooter Safety Concerns

Helmet and Safety Gear Use

  • Riders under 18 must wear a properly fitted, fastened helmet
  • Helmets significantly reduce the risk of head injury
  • All riders are encouraged to wear additional protective gear, such as closed-toe shoes, elbow and knee pads, and reflective clothing

Licensing Requirements

  • Riders must have a valid driver’s license or instruction permit to operate an electric scooter
  • Parents should be aware that young children who do not meet the licensing requirements are prohibited from riding an electric scooter

Sidewalk Restrictions

  • Riding electric scooters on sidewalks is prohibited in California
  • Although bicycles and E-bikes are allowed on sidewalks in Irvine, electric scooters are not

Speed & Operational Laws

  • The maximum speed for electric scooters is 15 mph
  • Passengers are not permitted to ride electric scooters
