Loud and Modified Exhaust

Police Motorcycle Officer on a Traffic Stop of a Yellow Sports Car.

The Irvine Police Department (IPD) is dedicated to ensuring the safety, comfort, and overall quality of life that our community values. We have heard concerns from residents about excessively loud or illegally modified vehicle exhaust systems.

These disturbances not only disrupt neighborhood peace but also violate California noise and vehicle code standards. To address these issues, the IPD is prioritizing the enforcement of laws regarding loud and modified exhaust systems throughout the city. We are also taking a zero-tolerance approach to street racing and dangerous street takeovers.

If you see racing or dangerous vehicles, please call 9-1-1. Together, we can reduce noise pollution and keep Irvine’s roads safe.

Modified Exhaust Information:

Muffler Requirements

  • All vehicles must have a properly working muffler that prevents excessive or unusual noise.
  • Altered exhaust systems may not pass California emission standards.
  • Devices that bypass or delete the muffler are prohibited.
  • Aftermarket exhaust systems are permitted if they are approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Enforcement

  • Excessive exhaust noise violations can result in a citation with no option for a correction ticket.
  • Officers may cite a vehicle if the exhaust is clearly louder than allowed or obviously modified.
  • Drivers may be required to take their vehicle to a Bureau of Automotive Repair Referee station for official testing.
