Scam Alert

Woman holding a cellular phone on a call to Irvine Police.

We have received reports of an unknown person calling residents, claiming to be from the Irvine Police Department (IPD).  The caller attempted to collect a fine, claiming that the individual failed to appear for jury duty.  As a reminder, we will never contact you to collect money or outstanding fines.

We understand that receiving a call from a police department can be intimidating, but scammers rely on fear to prompt people into acting quickly. Scammers can manipulate caller identification information to make it appear they are calling from legitimate government agencies, such as IPD. If you are uncomfortable with the caller’s questions, we suggest doing the following:

📱 Ask the caller for their name, identification or badge number, telephone number, and what section of the police department they work for

📱Call the IPD at (949) 724-7000 and verify the identity of the person who called you

📱Once you have verified who the officer is, ask the IPD Dispatcher or Desk Officer helping you to transfer you to the officer who called you

📱NEVER pay a “fine” or any money over the telephone
