Vehicles on public roadways must be moved every 72 hours. Violations can be reported to IPD at (949) 724-7000. For private property, please contact your property manager or homeowners’ association. The Irvine Police Department is unable to assist with abandoned vehicles on private property. If you suspect a vehicle may be stolen, call the Irvine Police Department for assistance.

Process

An officer will respond, issue a warning, and mark the suspected abandoned vehicle. At times, marks made by the officer may not be noticeable. An officer will return to the vehicle after another 72 hours have passed and check on it. If the car remains parked in violation, the officer may issue a citation or have the vehicle towed. If the vehicle is cited, an officer will return after another 72 hours and re-check the car. If this vehicle is still in violation, it may be towed. The process is at the discretion of each officer and may vary depending on the specific situation and the available information.

Due to the high volume of abandoned vehicle calls and resources, the provided timing is approximate and may vary.

If a vehicle is found to be in frequent violation of the 72-hour law, the vehicle may be marked without another warning notice being left.
