IDEC (Ham Radio)
Irvine Disaster Emergency Communications (IDEC) is a volunteer team of more than 50 licensed amateur radio operators supporting the City of Irvine’s emergency preparedness and public safety. Members provide critical backup communications during major disasters, offering a reliable, flexible resource with the technical expertise and specialized skills needed for effective disaster response.
Operating under the supervision of the Irvine Police Department, IDEC can quickly establish a citywide communications network when standard systems fail, linking public safety, evacuation centers, schools, medical facilities, and other key locations.
Members train regularly to maintain readiness, strengthen technical skills, and support the City’s Emergency Preparedness Plan. IDEC also assists with community drills and public safety events, ensuring Irvine is better prepared for any large-scale emergency.
