About the Patrol Division
The Patrol Division provides the first line of response to calls for service and ensures the safety of our community. Patrol officers handle everything from emergency response to community engagement, making their role critical in maintaining Irvine’s high quality of life.
Irvine employs a geographic policing model, dividing the city into three areas: Portola, University, and Crossroads, with each area further divided into three beats. This structure allows officers to develop a strong knowledge of their neighborhoods, build relationships with residents, and respond quickly to incidents.
Patrol officers work either four 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday, or three 12-hour shifts with a required buy-back Friday through Sunday, covering three shifts: morning, late afternoon, and overnight. This schedule ensures consistent coverage across the city at all hours. The Patrol Division is vital in keeping Irvine safe and connected to the community through proactive patrol, quick response, and community interaction.
