The Irvine Police Department prides itself in providing the highest level of public safety service to our community. By developing specialized units, we are able to extend our patrol capabilies by using officers highly trained in various fields.
MOUNTED UNIT
The primary roles of the Irvine Police Mounted Unit include patrolling open spaces within the city, supporting crowd control during events, and fostering community relations. The unit consists of horse-mounted officer patrols, which provide faster access to remote areas, such as trails and open spaces, that are inaccessible by vehicle. The horses are used to create a connection with the public, especially since many people enjoy horses, and their presence allows residents and officers to interact in a friendly and memorable manner.
DIRECTED ENFORCEMENT TEAM
The Directed Enforcement Team (DET) is a unit dedicated to addressing specific crime patterns and quality-of-life issues within the city. The officers conduct proactive patrols, surveillance, and investigations to arrest criminals, recover stolen property, and deter criminal activity. The team addresses a range of crimes, including theft, fraud, and violent crimes.DownloadExpandDelete
K9 UNIT
Irvine Police Department’s K9 unit is comprised of four highly trained canines trained to search and detect for drugs and explosives, locating missing people, finding crime scene evidence, protecting officers, and assist in the apprehension of suspects who flee from officers.
DRONE TEAM
The Irvine Police Department has a drone unit that utilizes drones to perform various public safety tasks, including serving as a “first responder” for immediate aerial response at the scenes of emergencies. The innovative program began operations in 2018, and the department transitioned to newer equipment in 2023 to provide even faster aerial assessment, search and rescue operations, and aid in de-escalation for high-stress situations.
IRVINE SPECTRUM CENTER OFFICERS
The Irvine Police Department has a unit that specifically patrols the Irvine Spectrum Center. These officers work in partnership with the Irvine Spectrum Center’s security team and retail store loss prevention officers to respond to incidents and crime. They are a full-time team of officers dedicated to preventing organized retail theft and other criminal activities 365 days a year.
